Madurai to Rameswaram

173 km~3 hrsBest time: October to March

About This Destination

Book a Madurai to Rameswaram cab and travel one of South India's most sacred routes — 173 km via NH87, approximately 3 hours by road. Rameswaram is one of the 12 Jyotirlinga shrines and a Char Dham pilgrimage site, home to the Ramanathaswamy Temple with its magnificent 22 sacred wells (theerthams) and India's longest temple corridor. The iconic Pamban Bridge and the ghost town of Dhanushkodi await at the island's edge.

Why Choose a Cab

A cab gives you door-to-door comfort without the luggage handling stress of train stations. Flexible timing means you can leave at dawn for temple darshan before the crowds build. Your driver knows temple parking, prasad stops, and the road conditions to Dhanushkodi — including the 15 km kutcha road at the island tip that makes an Innova or SUV the smarter choice. Stop at Adam's Bridge viewpoint and Agni Theertham beach without waiting for bus schedules.

Route & Journey Details

The route follows NH87 via Paramakudi — a good national highway for most of the distance. Key stops en route include Ramanathapuram and Mandapam. The final stretch across the Pamban causeway is one of India's most scenic drives. Expect 2–3 toll plazas. The last 15 km to Dhanushkodi is an unpaved road — an Innova Crysta or Tempo Traveller handles it far more comfortably than a sedan.

What to See

Ramanathaswamy Temple

One of the 12 Jyotirlinga shrines — famous for 22 sacred theerthams (wells) and the longest corridor of any Hindu temple in India. Plan 2–3 hours for a complete darshan.

Pamban Bridge

India's first sea bridge and one of its most photographed — a rail and road bridge arching over the turquoise waters between the mainland and Pamban Island.

Dhanushkodi

The abandoned ghost town at the island's southern tip, razed by the 1964 cyclone. A hauntingly beautiful landscape of sea, sand, and ruins — 15 km from Rameswaram.

Agni Theertham

The sacred beach adjacent to the Ramanathaswamy Temple where pilgrims bathe before entering the temple. Calm, clear water at the meeting of the Bay of Bengal and Indian Ocean.

APJ Abdul Kalam Memorial

The birth home and memorial of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, India's beloved former president, located in Rameswaram town.

Vehicle Recommendations

Sedan (Etios/Dzire): economical for couples or 2–3 travellers — suited for the main temple and Pamban but approach Dhanushkodi with care. Innova Crysta: recommended for families of 4–6 with extra luggage for temple overnight bags and comfortable on the Dhanushkodi road. Tempo Traveller (12–18 seater): ideal for pilgrimage groups covering the entire temple circuit in a single shared vehicle — best value for large groups.
